Serving the poor became her passion, to the point where at the age of 42, this charitable widow, still not a religious, made the vow to remain celibate and to serve the poor till her death to the extent of her capabilities.
The following year, in 1843, the Community of the Sisters of Providence was born. Emilie responded to God's call. The community grew for the benefit of the poor. Since then over 6000 women have committed themselves to pursue her mission of compassion.
We have had the joy of seeing Emilie, our foundress, beatified in Rome on October 7, 2001.
